Owens/Edwards - Argoed
« on: Saturday 06 January 07 20:36 GMT (UK) »
I am researching the Owens family who came from Argoed area.  In particular I would like to find a marriage between George Owens b about 1806 and who was living at Panty Vownog in 1841. He married Sarah Edwards b 1809 at Llanferres, Denbs some time around 1831.

They had 6 children born between 1831 and 1848: John, Eliza, Sarah, Mary, Ann and Isaac.  Isaac was my g grandfather and was born at Argoed in 1848.

Isaac married Elizabeth Hughes, b 1855 nr Tyddyn, Bistre, daughter of Ellis Hughes and Margaret Jones.

In 1871 Isaac was a labourer in the brickworks - does anyone have any clues as to which brickworks this might have been ?

Hello Gwyneth,

Isaac almost certainly worked in one of the Buckley brickworks but it's impossible to say which. A seemingly inexhaustible supply of fireclay was found and that was the raison-d'etre for the town's very existence. Even today, there are huge pits, evidence of where fireclay used to be extracted.

Pant-y-Fawnog or -Vownog is now called Mynydd Isa - once a hamlet, now a suburb. Chris

Thanks Chris.  I thought it was a long shot! Thanks too for the explanation about Pant y Vownog /Mynydd Isa - this is very helpful, not living in the area it is difficult to imagine what these places are like.
