1871 Census look up - Yorkshire please
« on: Friday 19 November 04 01:36 GMT (UK) »
My grandfather JOHN WILKINSON BARKER b. Sept 1855 Bramley Wortley has disappeared from the family home in the 1871 census.
His father Abel Barker and his second wife Martha and her two children are living in Town St. Armley and John W.'s sister Mary is living in Town St. Armley with her uncle John Wilkinson.
As John W. is 16 he may be working elsewhere. Can anyone help please? We don't know when he came to Australia but 16 seems a bit young!
Thanks, DelB

Thanks Pauline for replying.  This mystery has been around so long now a little while longer certainly won't hurt!

Maybe he lied about his age?

The john wilkinsons of about the right age all seem to be in a family; so he doesn't appear to be lodging.

Wilkinson Barker, 19 born Yorkshire, England

Cavalry Barracks, Leeds, Yorkshire
RG10/4558 Folio 99

Hi Pauline,
Well that's certainly an interesting idea!  I can't imagine there would be too many Wilkinson Barker combinations and if he put his age up I should be looking at other arrivals in Australia!
This has sent me scurrying off in new directions.  Many thanks for your time and persistence.
Cheer, Del
