William Botteriel
« on: Sunday 07 January 07 04:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi am looking for my great grandfather William Botteriel, he was listed deceased on my grandmothers wedding certificate who was Ethel Maude Botteriel.  My mother seemed to have thought that Ethel was brought up in an orphanage and I dont know where to start.
Any help would be much appreciated
Thanks
Chellin

Hi Chellin:
If you give some rough dates and places, I am sure someone will be able to give you some advice.

Hi Pat, Thanks for your reply, I dont know anything about William Botteriel only that he was deceased on my grandmothers wedding certificate in 1923.  She married Sidney Albert Wood on the 31st of March 1923 was 19 years old and lived at 66 High Street Merton Wimbledon and her father was listed as William Botteriel General Labourer Deceased.  I dont know if he died when she was a baby or not, I am stumped with this one
Thanks
Chellin
PS I think Ethel was born in 1906

Hi chellin2 !

I found this William in 1901 .... but the dates are a little off !!  ::) ... could be his father as it's not a very common name ! but can you think of any thing else that may be a clue ?

Thanks Annie but thats all the information I have, I think it is spelt right as on the marriage certificate it has Botterell crossed out and then the right spelling Botteriel -  and your right that is unusual.
Where is 307 East Street, is it in South London do you know???
Could well be his Father, the spellings must change all the time
Thanks

Hi Chellin

It's either Southwark or Bermondsey .... ( sorry but it's been changed !!  :P :P ) but Old Kent Road is mentioned on the same page !!  :)

I have found in my own family numerous spellings of the same name ... in my case they were illiterate ..... so didn't realise when it was being spelt wrong !!!!!

Also the name could have been mistranscribed .... so keep an open mind on spellings !!  :) :)
