Hi Chellin !

Do you happen to have any thoughts about the age of Ethel when she went to the orphanage - could she possibly have been adopted ??
Adoption records began in 1927 -  before that date - it was just unofficial fostering either through orphanages or through the local authority poor law system - the workhouse and their children's homes
As the orphanage or organistation isn't known - it might be better to start with the local authority records ( maybe you could start with Southwark or Bermondsey ) - at the London Metropolitan Archives

Hope this will give you some ideas

Annie  :)

PS Thank you Pat  ;) ;) :P

Hi Annie

No I have no idea what age she went into an orphanage but I dont think she was adopted or my Mother would have said, she just said your nanny Ethel was brought up in an orphanage.

Can I look at those records on the internet, Annie as I am in Perth Western Australia and cannot go to see them, its so annoying as my Mother only died last September I should have asked her if she had any idea.

Anyway thanks for all you help and advise

Botterell might have been the original spelling as it's hard to find anything about 'Botteriel', at least in England.  All FreeBMD has is one death of a Sarah in 1852.  Botterell/Botterill is more common.

Who were the witnesses on the marriage certificate?  I can't find Ethel's birth on the index although there is an Ethel Maude 'Bottle' registered in 1903 in Wandsworth (would fit with her stated age on the marriage certificate).  Entirely possible she was registered under her mother's surname but used her father's surname in later life.

Hi Jorose

Thanks for that information, I couldnt find her birth certificate either so that sounds like it could be her, Bottle, and the age and the place seems to fit.
The witnesses on the wedding certificate are Emma Hall and Thomas Foyle.
Maybe she thought Bottle was too plain and just made it sound better as Botteriel.  Like I said before on the certificate it is written BOTTERELL and then crossed out and then spelt BOTTERIEL.  I might try and get Ethel Maude ::) Bottles birth certificate and se if her father was called William

Thanks a lot
