Not exactlly sure if you are asking for help, or what?
You do not give any dates or First Names, or if you have any information on the people listed - please, can you be a little more specific as to how we can help you

Hi Chris,
sorry about that, just not thinking straight.
Benjamin CHAPMAN married Sarah Ann STEVENS 8th Jan 1833 in Warbleton.
They had at least one daughter named Mary in 1839
Mary then married HENRY CHAPMAN I suspect in Hastings about 1859 and they had a daughter Ann b 1859. Ann sailed to Australia in 1882.

Henry died and Mary then married a widower Moses DOWNER about 1862-3
Moses already had 6 children to his previous wife Mary LONGFORD and then mary gave him another 6 children.

Hi Geoff

My great grandmother Anne was born in Hastings in 1859. then her father Henry CHAPMAN died. Her mother, Mary then married a widower Moses DOWNER and had a further 6 children.
Anne's family history before 1859 does not exist for me at present.
Her mother Mary seems to be a CHAPMAN as well, born in Chapman's town, Warbleton to Benjamin Chapman and Sarah Stevens about 1837.
Could you recommend any record source that may help me out here.

As mentioned in a previous post - there is only 1 Benjamin Chapman in Warbleton on the 1851 census, married to Anne - there are no Sarah Chapmans (nee Stevens) on the 1851 census.

There are two more Chapman families in Warbleton – John Chapman aged 65 and his wife Mary aged 70 – no other family though; and Thomas Chapman 50 and his wife Naomi aged 45 plus 3 siblings.

Am checking the Hastings 1851 now for other connections.

Hi again Geoff

Could you tell me if there are any records for marriage & death in Hastings for the period 1850 - 1870??
My great grandmother Anne was born in Hastings in 1859. then her father Henry CHAPMAN died.
Her mother, Mary then married a widower Moses DOWNER and had a further 6 children.
Anne's family history before 1859 does not exist for me at present.

Could you recommend any record source that may help me out here.

The most obvious source is the 1851 census, plus the parish records of All Saints and St Clements with possibly St Mary in-the-Castle. I have transcripts of most of them – if I know where to put my hand on to them.

As regards the census:
There is no Henry Chapman in Hastings or surrounding villages in the 1851 census.
There is no Moses Downer in Hastings or surrounding villages in the 1851 census
There is a Moses Downer (34) in Wadhurst with wife Mary (32) and children Mary A, George, Moses, Aron, Daniel and Stephen.

Hi Chris,

First off, thanks for the help on this, it's been a brick wall for quite a few years.

The Sarah CHAPMAN nee STEVENS is actually Sarah ANN STEVENS, so it would not surprise to see her use her second name, quite a common occurance from what I can gather.

The Moses DOWNER you mention is the correct one, his wife, Mary LONGFORD died, he then married my widowed gg grandmother Mary CHAPMAN about 1862 /3
Mary and Moses named their first son Benjamin, presumedly after Mary's father.

Her first husband Henry CHAPMAN could have been anywhere in 1851 but they were in Hastings for the birth of their one and only child Anne CHAPMAN in 1859.

Maybe his death records might give me a clue.
Henry CHAPMAN died sometime between 1859 and 1862/3, Mary's first child to Moses was born in 1863.

Cheers
Geoff
