Is Heringly. Hellingly?
« on: Monday 08 January 07 16:59 GMT (UK) »
In the 1851 Census I have an Elizabeth Mitchell born 1785 Heringly. Sussex. Unable to find the place should it be Hellingly?
Many thanks. Dave.

Hi Dave

You don't say where Elizabeth was in the 1851, but that may not be relevant but I would say that must be Hellingly.

I've gone through as many Sussex places as I can think and it is most likely!

I agree with Hellingly, pronounced Helling lie by the way, I had a quick look through Sussex Place Names just in case but nothing even close.

Hi Dave

If you know what Elizabeth maiden name was we could check the IGI for Hellingly baptisms.

Hi Kerry, sorry have not found the maiden name yet.But had a son Walter Mitchell also born at Hellingly 1816. Elizabeth married Thomas Mitchell born 1777 Maidstone. Any help would be most gratefull.

Hi Dave

I don't know whether this is a help or a hindrance but in the Sussex Marriage Index there is

Thomas Michell and Elizabeth Whenham married at Hellingly on 1 October 1804  Both of this parish and a note saying he signed himself Mitchell.

HI Kerry, thanks for the info. The date seems about right as I have a death certificate for Elizabeth in 1874 died at the age of 88 born in 1786. This would make her 18 years old at the time of her wedding. I will have to look to see if I can find an Elizabeth Whenham born 1786.
Regards David.

Hi David

On the IGI (although a member submitted record) there is an Elizabeth Wenham christened 9 November 1791 to an Obadiah Wenham and Elizabeth Parris in Hellingly, Sussex.
