Toy maker.Cardiff. About 1900
« on: Tuesday 09 January 07 05:35 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone has any information about a toy maker,of Cardiff. His name was John Arnold, and he was self employed.
He lived around Roath. In 1901 he lived in Woodville Road, Cardiff.
Maybe someone has access to a trade directory, or similar?
Many thanks.
Arnold,   (London, Cardiff, Dudley, Blackburn)
Jones  (Birmingham, Oldham.)
Hollis (Oldham)
Cockcroft, Greaves Clegg, (Todmorden, Rochdale.)
Cole, (West Bromwich, Manchester, Canada.)
 Lewis,  (Mumbles,)
Hampson, Moore, (West Bromwich, )

I have ancestors whose address is listed as a toy shop in the 1901 census. Their address was 54 Carlisle Street civil parish Roath (part of) ward of Splott (part of). Their names were Philip and Maud Lloyd. Maud's occupation is listed as "general toy dealer". I know she was Philip's (my ancestor - GGG grandfather) second wife but maybe she has links to your John Arnold. A long shot I know but there can't have been that many people selling and making toys in that area of Cardiff around 1900.

Jones - Rhondda Valley/Neath
Harvey - Swansea/Calstock Cornwall
Blethyn - Pembrokeshire
Bowen - Pembrokshire
Vernon - Cheshire/Lancashire
Davies - Cardiganshire
James - Monmouthshire
Tozer - Calstock Cornwall
Brooks - Devon
Bonhomme - Calstock Cornwall/Jersey/Normandy
Massey - Lancashire

Thank you very much. You are right, you wouldn't expect many to be in that trade!
John had a second wife, but as far as I know she was Margaret.
His first wife was Mary.
John was in one census listed as "air ball maker", which apparently was a football!
He was also a general dealer, so I presume he had a shop of some sort!
Do you have any further info about Maud?
Regards,
Mavis

Not at the moment. As Maud was Philip's second wife and my ancestor was his first her her history is not one I've followed up as yet. If I find out anything more I'll make sure I get back to you. I can't find Philip on the 1891 census so not sure yet whether he was married to Maud at that time. Carlisle Street where they lived is still there today (now definitely in Splott) and beloe is a picture of it from around 1890. Woodville Road today is in the Cardiff area of Cathays and I'd say the 2 street are about a mile and a half apart.
