Hi and welcome to Rootschat,

I have searched on the 1861 for your Ruth and as yet nothing, I have used a wildcard and still cannot see her, have you applied for her birth certificate? this would give you her parents names, I can see her reg for her birth

RUTH DAVIS DOPSON
1851 OCT-DEC
HUNGERFORD
VOL 6 PAGE 21 (60)

also can see her mariage, again this would list her fathers name as well as her husbands family

RUTH DAVIS DOPSON
1880 OCT-DEC
HACKNEY LONDON
VOL 1B PAGE 815

Good luck

Hello Both

I have just had a look at the page for the birth and am having some difficulty reading the page reference for Ruth - given above as 20 (60).  There are only three figures, so it could be 260 or 210.

BUT in the same quarter there are two other DOPSON births - Noah and Thomas - and they are both on page 210.

I am not sure how much this should influence our reading of Ruth's page, but I did wonder if there are a lot of DOPSON families in the area, or could this possibly indicate triplets?  Would be very unusual!

The BMDs are free to view and the relevant page is here: Ruth's birth reference

Have a look and see what you think

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi All - I found Ruth in 1871 in service in London - she gives her place of birth as Kintbury which is a smaller place next to Hungerford,  there are several Dopson familys in Kintbury.  However I checked the baptisms at Kintbury (and the ones at Hungerford which are in the IGI) and there is no sign of a baptism for Ruth.

One snippet I did find via Google was this from the Curious Fox site -
'Birth certificate for George Dopson, born 1849 Kintbury, parents John Dopson and Ann Davis, to be given away to first family researcher to contact me. Charity donation welcome'

I wonder if the coneection with the surname Davis is significant - in 1861 John & Ann have a daughter Kate aged 9 who I cannot find in the other census's   ???

I have just found Ruth in 1881 now married to Henry Welling living in Chelsea - next door is William Dopson aged 33 born in Kintbury.  I am fairly sure this William is a son of the John & Ann I mentioned above - he is there on the 1851 census.

Fanny is another of the children of John and Ann listed with them in 1851 - Emma 12, Sarah 10, Fanny 8, Charles 6 William 3 and George 2

I have just realised that the register transcripts I checked for Kintbury only go up to 1842 - so of course Ruth isn't on there - the eldest 2 daughters  (Emma & Sarah) are though.
