WILKINS - South Derbyshire
« on: Sunday 14 January 07 13:17 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace ancestors on my Grandmothers side of the family but have hit a bit of a brick wall.

I know my Grandmother was born Dorothy May Wilkins in 1905 - Poole Village, Derbyshire.

Her Mother was Polly nee Mole who came from Birmingham - Her Father was Frederick Wilkins c1883

I am not having much luck trying to track them down on the Census as I can't say for sure where he was born.

A relative via an aunt has passed on some information although this in turn raises another question...

She has listed Fred's siblings as Maurice, John, Harry, Edmund, Horace, Arthur, Lily, Daisy, and Sarah.

She said that Maurice emigrated to Australia - he came home during WWI to see his mother and was killed on the return journey when his ship 'The Lusitania' was torpedoed.
Now the Lusitania was torpedoed during WWI with great loss of life - however it was travelling from the US to England and Not from England to Australia. I have checked for his name on Lusitania websites but found nothing so therefore assume he must have been on another ship which was sunk.

If anyone else is researcing this family or can help shed light on the sinking mystery - please get in touch.

There's too many Frederick Wilkins around in 91/01 of a similar age to Pollie to be at all confident ...

Recommend you obtain their Marriage Cert to ID their Fathers and occupations ...
