GOODCHILD & COULSON - Battisford.
« on: Sunday 14 January 07 15:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am looking for the birth and parents of James Goodchild, born c1818 in Battisford.

I believe he married Mary Ann Coulson in 1841. She was born c1822 and any information about her would be great too.

I know they had at least 2 children, Jane (b 1847) and Emma (b 1863)
There is a possible on IGI, but it is member submitted so I'm wary..... Anyway it states James' parents were Samuel and Mary.

There is also one Mary Ann Coulson on IGI (extracted) born 1824, parents = Charles Coulson and Martha Smith. However this was in Chelmondiston which is not in the registration district of Bosmere, which is where James and Mary Ann married. That leads me to believe that this is incorrect as the marriage generally took place in the brides Parish (I think!).

Obviously the best way froward would be to buy James and Mary Ann's marriage cert to find their parents. However I am researching on behalf of an elderly lady who cannot afford to buy every certificate. So if there is anyone out there who has access to resources which may yeild this information I would be really greatful.

TIA

Hello alllegs,

Have you tried the Cosford Database. I discovered it yesterday looking for the same family. I think my gx (lost count) grandfather was Edward Coulson which may have been Mary Ann's brother.
If its the same one her parents were William Coulson and Sarah Last but have a look. The Cosford Database is amazing!

Glos: STEVENS, SHIPTON, MUSTOE, ALDER, MORSE, ROBBINS, SCOTT
Suffolk: FARROW, LAMBERT, RAMPLEN, LILLISTONE
Somerset & Devon: Davys, Davey, Yeandle, Heal, Heywood, Williams, Palmer, Chilcott, Brewer, Bristow. Gold/Gould

Hi BagpussBee

Thank you for your message. What is the Cosford Database? I've never heard of it! I don't know who Mary Ann's parents are as yet, but I will definately google the Cosford Database and see what I can find.

Fingers crossed for a link with our Coulsons!

UPDATE - I have just looked on the Cosford Database but I can't find any information about the Coulson's. My Mary Ann was born in Battisford and lived in Ringshall occording to the census returns (1851 onwards, I can't find her in 1841). Battisford doesn't seem to be covered by the Cosford Database - Am I looking in the wrong part?

Love

Hi alllegs,

Battisford is not in the Cosford Hundred so Ray will not have it covered on the Cosford Database (www.cosford-database.co.uk)

However, he has recently added Ringshall in the Bosmere and Claydon Hundred and you will also find he is beginning to add some information from Stow too.

Battisford is also in the Bosmere and Claydon Hundred which is covered at www.stowmarket-history.co.uk and there is someone listed there looking for Colson (a variation on your name of interest).

Also on The Suffolk Surnames List, Coulson is being sought in Hitcham/Combs area - might be worth following up as that is not too far from where you are searching too. www.suffolk-surnames-list.co.uk

Happy to help anytime ;)

There are maps at www.suffolk-surnames-list.co.uk and for how Suffolk used to look (which is not really that much different if you take away the A14) try www.old-maps.co.uk
