Thomas BECKETT Berampore East Indies 1824
« on: Sunday 14 January 07 21:23 GMT (UK) »
I have just found one of my family lines (not direct ancestor) died in Berampore East Indies sometime before 1824 (date of will probate).  I think he was in the "Honorable East India Company, Madras Establishment" - does this make sense to anyone, and how can I find out more, eg when he died etc.  He had been promoted from Major to Lieutenant Colonel before his death.

Any help appreciated, hope I'm on the right board!

Jean

This is a good site to look at and has a number of links eg to the British Library site - where the India Office records are kept.

Thanks Barbara,

That site is a help, I wonder how he ended up from a farming family in Cheshire to working for the "Honorable East India Company"!

I'll keep going through as there are a few useful links on that site, at least it will help me with the background.

Hello Jean
I found that site when I first discovered that several generations of my husband's ancestors had worked in the HEIC.  They were civil servants and had to be recommended for positions.  I don't know very much about the Army people although I remember there was a training college - can't remember the name! The one for the civil servants was Haileybury.

That's interesting Barbara, I think he may have been recommended.

His father died when he and his sister were still minors and mother had already died - his father's will gives guardianship of the two children to Lady Leicester - his father was her estate steward.  It looks likely that she had the influence to get him his position.

Thanks,

Jean

That's great Barbara and does make sense in terms of the family.

I'll keep digging around and see what I can find.
