John TIBBLES & Elizabeth FRENCH
« on: Monday 15 January 07 08:19 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Does anyone link to either of those two people or have any info on them?  Or does anyone have a spare John Tibbles (or variants) circa 1749 or a spare Elizabeth French circa 1753?

My ancestors, John Tibbles (Theobald) & Elizabeth French, were married at St Mary the Virgin Chelmsford 25 Sep 1774, both were said to be single persons and "of the parish"  They had ten children baptised at Chelmsford between 1775 & 1796.

Their eldest child, John, remained in Chelmsford, or at least married there but the remainder of the children appear to have moved elsewhere.  The second eldest child William (my ancestor), turned up in Stebbing where he married in 1802 and raised a large family.

I have searched the Chelmsford PRs (online SEAX) for their baptisms but found no sign of them  :(

Hoping someone has a link or info to assist in finding them but not holding my breath. ;D

Hallo findem, I've been going through some of my older notebooks and came across some entries I noted from the T/R 168 series (a microfilm of transcripts and indices held by Essex Archaeological Society made available to ERO some time ago). In particular
T/R 168/13

Pebmarsh marriages
1653 July 14 John Theobald m Maria Fletcher
1745 June 18 William Tibbold of Maplestead m Elizabeth Sayers
1808 8 Jan Joshua Theobald m Judith Binks
1822 (no dy/month) James Theobald lab m Margaret Fisher w

Peldon marriages
1778 Feb 4 Sam  Tibbald  m Eliz Hance
1778 Sep 21 Will Theobald  w of West Mersea m Lyd Hubbard w
1783 Aug 24 Sam Theobald w m Mary Jennings

I realise any connection is likely to be tangential at best but there may be leads to likely parishes.  Pebmarsh and Peldon are not in IGI (per Hugh Wallis's website).

There were many Sewell baptisms, marriages and burials from 1660s-1750s in both of the above parishes

Hi Clincher,

Many thanks for the info, it is greatly appreciated.

Very interesting indeed especially the Pebmarsh marriages, I'll make a note to check baptisms in Pebmarsh, Peldon and the Maplesteads next UK visit.  I've long had a hunch that my Theobald search will lead to somewhere in the north east Essex area.  Might even find my Sewells there.

Interesting the marriage of John Fletcher to Maria Fletcher, apart from the possible connection to John Tibbles.  I have an Ann Maria Fletcher who married into the Searles who married into the Theobalds, inbreeding rears it's ugly head  ;D

Regards.

Hi Findem,

This is my first post.
My family I have researched so far is all in Norfolk and has lead me to
John Theobald,  according to one of the census records I have he was born around 1795 West Burgh, Essex.  He then married in Norfolk. I Wonder if he may have been a descendant of your John Tibbles as don't know the Essex area,  he may also have been called Tibbet.  I also have Relatives in Aus.

Regards

Hi Theo Searcher,

A warm welcome to RootsChat.

My John Tibbles (circa 1749) had a son John baptised in 1775 at Chelmsford, he married Elizabeth Richardson in 1803  at Chelmsford.  John (junior) and Elizabeth baptised three children at Chelmsford, Elizabeth 1804, John 1806 and Sarah 1811.  I think you'll agree your John could not have descended from those families.

I don't discount the possibility of a link betwen our Theobalds though, through perhaps a brother of John (1749) or an earlier generation.  Currently I have no real clues to the origins of my John Tibbles, so he could have been born anywhere in Essex, or for that matter another county.

When you say the census has him born in West Burgh, Essex, I think that would be West Bergholt.  Having checked for West Burgh in the index of my UK road atlas and the online Gazateer of British Place Names no West Burgh came up.  I suspect the West Bergholt locals shortened the name to West Berg and probably still do, and the spelling of Burg down to the census enumerator.  It will be interesting to see if anyone shoots this theory down in flames  ;D

West Bergholt being about 3 miles north east of Colchester is none too far from the Essex and Suffolk border, there were/are quite a number of Theobald families on either side of the border.  If you haven't already done so it might pay to ask on both the Norfolk and Suffolk boards if anyone has any knowledge or links to your Theobalds.  Not to forget a post on this board either, never know your luck.

You will find the people on RootsChat a very friendly and helpful bunch.

Please keep in touch, I'd be very interested to learn of your progress.

Good luck.
