Where do I start with irish family
« on: Monday 15 January 07 19:31 GMT (UK) »
I have Joseph Lea (born Birkenhead 1862, father = john),  marrying Margaret Taylor (born Ireland 1864, father = Joseph / deceased) in 1890 at Birkenhead. I cannot find either Lea or Taylor family in the 1881 England census (Later in 1891 Joseph and Margaret Lea and children are at Beckwith st Birkenhead, and Joseph is a coal dealer with his own "team")

I have no idea where to start with margaret, and as I cannot find Joseph in 1881 I am wondering if his family is from Ireland, and maybe he was there at the time of the census. ???

Hi
If you look on the IGI familysearch.org site, you will see there is a Margaret Taylor born in 1864, in co.Louth, Ireland, her father is Joseph Taylor.
So that could be a possible match, bearing in mind though that the IGI is not an exhaustive list of all bmd's, so you would have to check further.
If this is the correct Margaret Taylor, it would make sense geographically speaking, as co.Louth over to Birkenhead is a reasonable distance to travel; it could be that the Lea family or the Taylor family travelled for whatever reasons between the two places before they married in 1890 at Birkenhead. Joseph Lea's father could also have been from Ireland originally.

Unfortunately the only complete surviving censuses for Ireland are the 1901 and 1911.

Good luck!

You're welcome.
If it turns out to be the correct Margaret Taylor, you could then try to order her birth certificate,as general civil registration in Ireland started in 1864.

http://www.groireland.ie/fees.htm

you will see that there is a local registrar's office in Dundalk co.Louth, when you scroll down the page.

Cheers

Thank you - i will keep a note of the site - I'm not sure how I can decide whether it is the right one or not (all I know is her father was Joseph / labourer) and she was born Ireland - but i may take a risk with the certificate anyway
