Help on Will
« on: Tuesday 16 January 07 17:58 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I just downloaded a Will form the National Archives online. and have the downloded Document for John edwards Wick St Lawrence. 1806.  his son was George Edwards he is meantioned in this the document but this Doc they gave me does not look like a will as such, and I cannot read what it all means.
its a bit like a Census with some deatils on????

please can someone have a look at it for me its in PDF and tell me what the doc is. it said on the search it was the Will,  but am not to sure?

Hi Russel,
Can you attach the PDF to a message on here, and we can download it and take a look.

It sounds like the probate record, but as Prue suggests, see if you can attach it to a message on this thread.

It's listed in the Death Duty Registers as a will. Perhaps it's an inventory, and/or a list of beneficiaries?

As Julian and Prue have suggested, if you can add it to a message, there'll be lots of people ready to help.

Hi all

I am attaching it to this message,  As Koromo says it was listed as a Will but under Death Duty Reg , but i thought it was a will or.. it mentions his son george in diffrent parts of the doc.

You have a copy of the Death Duty Register. The National Archives will not hold the will itself because it was probated in a church court in Wells, so the Somerset Record Office will hold the actual will.

The National Archives research guide on

Wills Before 1858: Where to Start
and
Death Duty Records, From 1796

found at

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/researchguidesindex.asp

will explain what precisely a Death Duty Register entry is and how wills were probated before 1858 and where you are likely to find them.
