Deirdre

On closer inspection, although the uniforms look the same, the collar badges look different.  Therefore, the soldier in the last post would be in a different regiment to Henry.  :(

So would the mean that yes he is in the Royal Engineers but we still do not know which regiment?
This being one step forward in the search.
Is there no where in England that is the home of the Royal Engineers where they have a museum of sorts of military memorabillia.  Like when I was over there (pre doing genealogy grrrrr) The Tower of London had all sorts of military bits and pieces down in their baracks area and of course the whole Tower is now a museum.  Are they online?

There is this link:
http://www.remuseum.org.uk/
Looks like they might charge though. Perhaps an email with a photo and they may be able to give you a simple "yes" or "no". Good luck.

My soldier is my Great Grandfather Henry Nott he was born 1857 Hampton, Lovett, Worcestershire age when married 33 years marriage date 25/10/1890

Father Samuel Nott c1816 Hartlebury, Worcestershire, (census labourer - Henry and Annie's wedding cert game keeper)

Mother Mary Brookin c1822 Salwarpe, Worcestershire
source: both Marriage Certificate - married Annie Hunt Gympie Qld Aust.
.....................Census 1861, 1871, 1881. found for me by Mary from Italy on Family Tree Forum

Apart from the photo of Henry in his uniform the information is word of mouth from my great grandmother to my mother.  Henry was an engineer in the Queens Guards before he came to Australia and he came out here via Melbourne with his brother.  My mother can not remember his brothers name.  When they arrived in Melbourne they went into a shop to buy a coat and a hat each and when they went in there was no one around so they walked around and got what they wanted and left the money on the counter and walked out.  My mother doesn't know how long it was before Henry continued on to Gympie or if his brother travelled with him or stayed in Melbourne.  I can find no record of Henry Nott arriving in Melbourne.  I can find now record of Henry Nott leaving England.  I can find no record of Henry Nott being born.  I can find no record of Henry Nott working at the Gympie Mines.  On the marriage certificate it says he was a Miner living at Cootharriba Rd Gympie and the witnesses to the marriage were a James Wood and Emma Wood.  Two of Henry's sisters came to Aust.

Fanny Nott aged 23 immigrated 1883 via Maryborough aboard the Melpomene IMM/117 477 M1699 30/1/1883.
Emma Nott aged 25 immigrated 1885 via Maryborough aboard the Silver Eagle IMM/116 346 M1698

In 1881 census Henry his brother William and his widowed were living with his married sister.  Mary Ann Pennington c1849 and husband William J Pennington c1847 bricklayer.  At 2 Princess Street, King's Norton, Worcestershire.

His father died March 1866 at age 49 at Droitwich 6c 262
There is a marriage for his mother and father:
June 1841
Brooken Mary Droitwich 18 387
Knott Samuel Droitwich 18 387

His sisters marriage record:
Sept 1876 (100%)
Nott Mary Ann Droitwich 6c 523
Pennington William Joseph Droitwich 6c 523

To my way of thinking this is a lot to know but it does not answer vital questions.
1. Birth record
2. The whole Uniform and service record
3. emigration from England and immigration into Australia
4. When he arrived in Gympie and started working at Gympie Gold Mines.

His Death is burial date 12/11/1923 age 64
South Brisbane Cemetery
181 Annerley Road Dutton Park
Map 179 P4
Portion 7A Grave U
Henry and my great grandmother Annie Nott (nee Hunt) share the same grave Annie was buried 6/5/1937 aged 72

In going through this paperwork (which is filed on the floor) I have found a printout from Ancestry.com.au which I forgot I had and it is a record of arrival for Henry Nott age 27 arriving at Maryborough aboard Duke of Sutherland 1887.
This ship arrived Maryborough 2/1/1888 out of London AL M471 IMA 3/8 - Comments (IA) Maryborough Depot: Lists of Immigrants arriving.
I do not know if this is my Henry and obviously I didn't find William (but on reflection I didn't know about William then). ::)

Well Annie this ended up quiet the saga didn't it sorry,  but I would go on until the cows came home if it would help but I do think this is all of it.   There is the forward line from the marriage with 4 children the youngest of who was my grandmother and their move in approx 1920 to Brisbane.  I don't think the dates etc of these would be benifitial at this point so will gift you with peace and leave the above in your hands and send up a little preyer  ;) that you can help me with my Henry Nott.

Thank you for your interest Annie

Hello Deirdre

Friend Annie is so interested in Military history - she usually has all the answers - but she also has a bad habit of thinking I know all things Oz - so sent me the details of your most interesting thread. You have probably lived in Qld much longer than myself (I came here when first married) so I fear I have little to offer, but I would make the following suggestions

Re the uniform

If Henry belonged to a "royal regiment", there should be an address in London where you can write to them. I found the address of the Scots Guards in London from the National Archives (English) web site. I sent them a snail mail letter and they instantly answered by email. Unfortunately my man was too early for their records (they had information from 1799) & they directed me back to the archives. I would assume the other regiments should have similar - but apart from Google/the national archives, I don't know where to look. I can find the Scots guards details if you are interested in same.

I wonder would it be worth a query to the Australian War Memorial
http://www.altarama.com.au/awm/reft000.aspx

At the time in question, I would think any Australian uniforms would have been as English - I know very little pre WWI re Australians serving, but I have seen instances where Australians joined various UK regiments - in the Crimean and Boer Wars.

For your questions on immigration and when he arrived in Australia - Do you have a copy of his Qld death certificate? Presumably Annie was the informant & it should have approx time he arrived in Australia & whether he lived in another Australian state (perhaps making it easier to find immigration details).

If it was your man arriving in Maryborough in 1887 there may be more information on the film at the Qld archives in Brisbane. It is possible, however, that he did arrive through Melbourne and perhaps went to Gympie in search of Gold.

(I did however have an immigrant supposedly arriving in Maryborough 1867 and I have never found a record of same).

For the queries unrelated to the uniform - including information on the Gold mines a query on the "Immigrants to Australia" board may get some further information. I do have a thought that the Qld govt has a museum in Gympie related to the gold mines - apologies - if you already know all about same.

There is an index to a mining lease at the Queensland archives for a William Nott but no sign of Henry in the index.

Trish and Annie
Thank you for your interest  :)

I have been into the war memorial website and posted a question with them and asked if they would like a copy of the photo for inspection, now I do the waity thing.

I also went through the naa.gov site again (yes had done that one before thanks all the same Annie)  Nada as before. But you never know something could have been entered since I last looked but  :( no.

I found a website http://www.regiments.org/regiments/uk/lists/mvcxeng.htm and tracked down the colours starting at Worcestershire who have a white collar and looking at the surrounding shires it looks promising in Warwickshire..but..  :( website under construction... :'(  but the colours are right...waity thing again.
