(b) the priest or parish clerk was useless at paperwork -that is not unusual in my experience.
(c) the priest or parish clerk had had a snifter too many.
This did bring a smile
I have seen both of these - in one parish register a lecture even on why one of the priests was dismissed from the parish for too many drinks - and two of our family were registered at the time to the wrong parents!
