Do you have the family on any census? I can see a Thomas Stephen Wright from Twyning, Glos in 1861 married to Mary with 4 month old Arthur Emmanuel RG9/4029 folio 62 pg 4. This Mary gives her birth place as Pentyrch, Glam not Pontypool, Monmouthshire.  Her place of birth is transcribed  on Ancestry as Pontypool for 1881 census but clearly says Pentyrch on the scan. She's not consistent with her age on the 3 entries I've checked.

Do you have the marriage certificate for Mary's father's name and occupation because there are just a few  ::)  Mary Howells in Glamorgan.
Cornwall: Allen, Bevan, Bosisto, Carnpezzack, Donithorn, Huddy, James, Retallack, Russell, Vincent, Yeoman
Cards: Thomas (Llanbadarn Fawr)
Glam: Bowler, Cram, Galloway, James, Thomas, Watkins
Lincs: Coupland, Cram
Mon: Cram, Gwyn, John, Philpot, Smart, Watkins
Pembs: Edwards (St. Dogmael's)
Yorks: Airey, Bowler, Elliott, Hare, Hewitt, Kellett, Kemp, Stephenson, Tebb

in that case, think you might need to get the marriage cert to identify her father and give another clue to her age.

There is this entry in 1851
Gwaelod y Garth, Pentyrch H0107/2456 folio 242 pg 37
Lewis Howell head mar 40 coal miner b. Chapel Llanilltern
Mary wife 38 b. Pentyrch
Evan son 16 coal miner b. Pentyrch
Lewis son 14 b. Pentyrch
Mary dau 12 b. Chapel Llanilltern
Margaret dau 7 b. Pentyrch
Morgan son 5 b. Pentyrch
Lydia dau 11 months b. Pentyrch
(Llanilltern being a mile and a half from Pentrych, and less than 3 miles from Gwaelod y Garth) which looks good until same family with Mary still at home appears on 1861.

then there's this entry in Eglwysilan parish
next door to Pickadilly Inn, Caerphilly H0107/2454 folio 16 pg 25
John Howells head mar 58 shoemaker
Ann wife 57
David son 23 shoemaker
Mary dau 16 servant
Charles son 14 scholar
Thomas Thomas visitor  age ? sailor b. Carm, ?
all Howells family born Caerphilly - daughter Mary not with parents in 1861. Think you need cert to identify father.
