CHILTON/HOOD after 1871 Hartlepool COMPLETED THANKS TO NUTTY
« on: Friday 19 January 07 11:45 GMT (UK) »
Looking for Henry CHILTON b.1819 Sunderland married 1842 to Margaret HOOD b.1824 Seaton Carew.
Have 1851-1871 census details but can't find them after that (they may have died of course)
The curious thing is that although in 1851 & 1861 they were Henry & Margaret CHILTON, in the 1871 census Middleton RG13/4917 fol.68 p.23 they were listed as Henry C. HOOD and Margaret HOOD, living at Sea Terrace, Middleton, Hartlepool.  Henry was a sea pilot.

many thanks,
Barbara

Excellent Jane, thank you very much, don't know where I've been looking but I certainly didn't find those  :-[

That's a big help, wonder why he changed his name to hers, seems a bit odd for those days!

Thanks again, Barbara

Wonder why he changed his name?? Was she an only child ? no one else to carry her family name on, I knew of somebody who did that, when they got married the groom was paid by the father, (local bigwig) to change his name, to carry it on, as he had only one daughter, and he didn't want the name to die out?

They keep us on our toes eh  ;D

No, they had no children to carry on any surname, Margaret was one of 7 Hood children, the Hoods were all pilots for the port of Hartlepool, as was her husband Henry Chilton.  Looking further down the tree though, mostly they had daughters, or sons that died young, and so the name almost died out apart from a couple of sons that I haven't been able to trace after 1871.

Very odd, but that's how I like it   ;D
Thanks very much for your help
Barbara

Hi not sure if you are still looking for any information, but some details are listed in our property deeds:

Margaret Hood died 27/1/1836 it names son as William hood, daughter Margaret Anderson (widowed), and grandson William Chiltern (otherwise know as William Hood), baptised on 26/4/1807 at Monkwearmouth.
Another Son is mentioned Robert Hood who drowned at seat in 1836 being a chief mate of the Barqe Navarine? lost on her passage from Sunderland to Canada.

William(Chilton) Hood died on 6/6/1855 leaving the property to John Hood and Robert Hood, his wife Anne Hood died on 4/12/1856 and is buried at Seaton Carew.
The address they lived at was Seaton Carew one of the original dwelling houses on the sea front.
It is an old document and is rather confusing and is quite detailed with names.

Hope this helps.
Regards
Wendy
