I have John Gates Barnsley b1849 in Northamtonshire, England - who came out with his parents George & Ann in 1852.
I presume he married c 1870 and had a child of the same name - and that is the one we are now on?!
Any chance of finding a connection?
I can only just keep up with all this data - GREAT isn't it.
I need a late night drink now (just coffee honest) - although it should be something stronger in celebration for all you have found for me!!

The John Gates Barnsley in WWI is John born 2 Sep 1891 in Queensland. He is the son of your John Bates Barnsley b. 1849, who didn't marry until 1889. How he got to Queensland is yet to be determined.
Sit down and have some red wine (bugger coffee) and draw a picture of all these folks everyone is talking about & how they all interrelate. The name Barnsley seems to be not so common - In Queensland I have listed ALL that existed to 1914, so you are probably related (inlaw like) to all the Barnsleys in Australia. We can blame you for everything they did or didn't do

The concept of counties and parishes exists in Oz - no doubt copied from England. Qld was divided into a series of counties/parishes and many (probably all) had county names taken from England. Real property desciptions tend to be Lot nnn on Plan nnn County of xxxx Parish of xxx - and if I could find mine - I would give the actual details.
The names could well have been devised by the surveyors who did the original work.
Maybe John Gates Barnsley was the first person in the Georgetown area of Queensland? He could have named it the County of Cumberland - If you look at the records for his brother, you will see it says Georgetown Qld
Looking at the map -
www.multimap.com - it is to the west, between Cairns and Townsville - so
they probably were the whole town Imagine being left there a widow with 10 children
