1869 - Rich deposits of alluvial and reef gold were discovered in the locality. The area became known as the Etheridge Gold Field

My original Barnsley - George b c1822 died in Cambell Creek - Victoria 1858 - inundated with mud slides while searching for alluvial gold.

Now I must find out what Alluvial gold is - first time I have heard of this - more data!!

hey  Keith

I  think Alluvial  gold  iwas   found  when  you  wash  it  rather  than  mining  underground in a gold reef
but  don't take  that as  fact  just my  own thoughts that is

hence  mud slides  etc  cause  the areas  would be awash  with  water from  people  panning  for gold and  the area  around  would weaken

Brief Note:

The County of CUMBERLAND in NSW encompasses the expanded City of Sydney.

Also,  there is a Georgetown in northern Tasmania as well as the mentioned Georgetown in the Gulf Savannah region of North Queensland.

Hope this helps -

hello  there

now  trisha don't tell  keith  too  many  fibs

George Town is  part  of  the Etheridge Shire Coucil
the area was founded  in the  1860's a bit early  for George  :o

Blimey Jenn

Population 300 - probably 90% of them are called Barnsley. Odds on, he went there looking for gold or the like - and it wasn't until 1889 that any women of marriageable age appeared there  :). Could be worth an email to the local council/library to see if the name is well known in the area.

His death certificate would probably be interesting Keith - odds he died in an accident

At the Qld archives there are a few records of mining leases to a John barnsley
