HATTERS in Southwark/Bermondsey abt. 1800

Hoping for some advice here to help me bust down a particularly annoying brick wall...

My OH's g-g-g-g-grandfather was John WOOD.  According to his children's baptism records (St Saviour, Southwark, 1801-1812) he was a Hatter, and married to Lucy.  Apart from a possible sighting in the 1841 census (absolutely no way of knowing it's him, apart from name and occupation which match) I have been unable to find out anything at all about him and have come to a dead stop on that line.

As far as I know, none of his children became Hatters...hubby's g-g-g-grandfather was a blacksmith  :-\

My question is:  what would be the likelihood of him having been a member of the Worshipful Company of Hatters?  Would this be a way of finding out more about John?

Any other hints for tracking him down would be appreciated!!

Many thanks for any advice
