Hi Betty

It's a wee bit more difficult to find the children who had left by 1851. For example, George could be any one of 4 or 5 people and the daughters might have married. I thought I'd found Isabel/Isabella's marriage but wrong mother  :(

It certainly looks like you are following the right family.

I have studied the censuses.  As you say it will be difficult to follow the older children.  I couldn't get a definite match on Alexander until 1881.  Although I should have found him in 1861 and 1871 married to Isabella Williamson, as he was married in 1856.  Do you have access to census records for Urquhart, Morayshire.

I see there are four new surnames, Morrison, Robertson, Keay and Fraser.
In the 1841 census there were three girls and in the 1851 another.  Assuming the girls only married once.  Would it be too time consuming to try and find  the grandchildren's births, maybe John Keay being the first.  Surname being more unusual.  That would give me who married who. This is not as important as my initial query so leave it if too time consuming.

If I could find the birth of Jane or Ann who are in the 1851 census or the death of Ann, as she did not marry they might give us the maiden name of their mother and that would confirm or otherwise that Alexander is connected to this family.

The fact that Ann never married  would change my theory of the four surnames.

Thanks again for all your help.

Cheers
Betty

The Isabella that I found had married a Morrison which is why i thought it might be her but the father's occupation was wrong and mother's name was wrong.

I'll have a look at the earlier censuses for Alexander and keep looking for the others. There was a possible George in Shetland (I think) on the 1851, b. Rathven a fisherman. Will investigate further.

PS - we know that Ann's partner was Robertson  ;)

Think daughter/sister Ann had more than one child:

Also, same batch number

I think this maybe John Keay:

4 November 1864, John McKenzie. Mother Ann McKenzie

Haven't found the other two.

Betty  :)

Ann was the informant on both her parents death certificates (1881 and 1885), was on the 1851-1871 censuses with them  and was in the census with her widowed mother in 1881. The fact that her daughter overlaps the 1861-1881 censuses and the 1891, I think, proves as far as possible without obtaining her death cert.  that this Ann was the daughter of Alexander McKenzie and jean/Jane/Janet/Carr/Kerr

Sorry the information you gave me on Jane Mckenzie's death had not registered.  George Carr being her father.  Too much to take in.

Thanks also for the other info.

Betty

A lot to be taken in at once  :) I had to re-check to see if I'd posted this -

IGI C111501 again

Birth

4 June 1860 Cullen

Ann Robertson. Parents - Alexander Robertson and Ann McKenzie

I'll have another squint at the McWilliam entry on the census to see if I can get a better view of the name. It seems that Ann had quite a few children.
