Edmonds Apothecary Main Street Wexford"
« on: Sunday 21 January 07 23:46 GMT (UK) »
Good morning members,

I am researching my GGGrandparent who may have been an Apothecary in Main Street Wexford between 1790-1860

Richard [Henry] EDMONDS

Any Edmonds name or a variation thereof will be a valuable link.

There could have been a connection with James FURLONG, Apothecary.

Withsincere thatnks for your interest ....

Good morning Nick..

Thank you for your valued interest in looking up information in respect of my EDMONDS search.

There were EDMONDS' born in Wexford between 1820-1833.  One of them was George Gilbert EDMONDS my GGrandfather born 1825-1833; another was William EDMONDS b 9 August 1829 [Maybe they were brothers / cousins].

George Gilbert EDMONDS died in Brisbane 100 years' ago in December 1906 and his grave with monument at South Brisbane Cemetery is abt. 15km away from where I live.

There were at least 4 males and 1 female in the family of Richard Henry EDMONDS who married Catherine nee FURLONG b 5 April 1793, in Wexford RC.

William [maybe a son of Richard / cousin of George Gilbert] went to America abt 1850 and I have managed to trace his descendants who still live in America.  William married Martha Cochran ELLENDER in Wexford abt 1845 [both were very young].

George Gilbert EDMONDS came to Australia before 1857 possibly after an earlier emigration to America.  He was married in Sydney on 16 April 1857 to Eliza Maria COTTRELL formerly of Clonmel, IRE.

Nick, I have now reached a thick brick wall in my 16 years' of research.

I even established an EDMONDS page on the Internet -

http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/e/edmonds/pats.html

Even if there is a small snippet of information I will be pleased to receive it.

Sincerely

Bruce EDMONDS b 23 January 1937 GGrandson of George Gilbert EDMONDS
Brisbane Australia

Hiya EDO,

The names below are from Griffith's Valuation, Wexford which took place in 1853.

Richard Edmonds, Redmondstown, Rathaspick, Wexford
Thomas Edmonds,  Rathaspick, Rathaspick, Wexford
Thomas Edmonds, Scaughmolin, Rathaspick, Wexford
Benjamin Edmonds,  Allenstown Little, St. Iberius, Wexford
Edward Edmonds, Tenacre, Tomhaggard, Wexford
Jane Edmonds,  Ballybeg, Ballymore, Wexford
Richard Edmonds, Forth Commons, Kildavin, Wexford
Richard Edmonds, Bargy Commons, Kilmannan, Wexford

I don't understand nickr90's message as the above list shows Richard Edmonds three times. He's in three different areas. Sorry I don't know how close they are to each other or to Wexford city at the moment.
If you like I'll see if I can get the distances for you.
What about Edmunds too ??? There are a couple of them in the Valuations ...

William Edmunds,  Cribstown, Rathaspick, Wexford
John Edmunds, Bennettstown, Tacumshin, Wexford

The Valuation also shows the name James Furlong but none in Main Street, Wexford.

Christopher

Good morning

Thanks for that Christopher;  it provides a little more information for me in my unsuccessful searching after some 14 years, for my GGGrandfather Richard Henry EDMONDS.

I cannot seem to get any further than the Parishes as you have listed.

Dublin Archives cannot assist me in the birth of my GreatGrandfather George Gilbert EDMONDS b 1825-1833 in Wexford as records for that era were destroyed in the 1920s.

At least I have George Gilbert's  burial under control as he is buried in South Brisbane Cemetery only 12 miles from me, with a handsome obelisk.

His Death Certificate bears no assistance as it shows 'his own name' as being his father.  Whilst it is possible to squeeze in another generation, I have not been able to discover any evidence of such.
I have recently had the State Archives in Brisbane go back to the original Death notification, but to no avail.

He was quite an elusive character -
no record of arrival in Australia:
gave State in America as his birthplace when notifying his own children's birth!!
I have checked that out also without success.

I started up the following EDMONDS / EDMUNDS pages to try to uncover more information, but so far, no success -

http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/e/edmonds/

Once again many thanks.

My search was for the business in Wexford town in Griffiths where the person leasing the building would be found.
In that period most business people 'lived over the shop' rather than in outlying parishes nececesitating a long ride to work over rudimentary roads.

Good morning Nick and Christopher

Thank you once again for your assistance.

The 'father in law' was a James FURLONG and he may have been an Apothecary.

It all presumes that the Apothecary was a Store, whereas they / he may have just resided at that address and worked elsewhere in the Town.

I understand that there was an Apothecary attached to an 'hospital' near to Main Street in Wexford Town
