Marriage certificates - but what now
« on: Tuesday 23 January 07 17:52 GMT (UK) »
I think I have found the marriage of Gertrude Fuller in 1911 July/Aug/Sept  at Paddington London  (vol 1a Page 233)  What do I do now?   Do I have to visit a History Centre to look at the Microfiche?  I want to find out the name of the man she married.

Sorry - you cannot view marriage certs anywhere, you have to buy them!

You can do this online at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
but it costs £7 a time

Ah - its actually Page 223 .. so she married one of the 2 gentlemen shown.

Do you have any other info about her ?

Marriages Sep 1911

Fuller  Gertrude H    Paddington  1a 223
Heslam  George W     Paddington  1a 223
Stuart  Sidney A     Paddington  1a 223
Williams  Mabel S D     Paddington  1a 223

Depending on what you want to achieve, you could order the Cert with the stipulation that the husbands name is STUART say, and if it isnt you will receive a refund of £4.00 - AND know that it was thus the other chap.
Of course, if it IS Stuart its cost you the full £7.00 anyways ....

Or - as its 1911 onward, you can search for births of either surname with mothers maiden name Fuller ....

Thank you everyone.   I'm sorry about the page no I must have written it down incorrectly.    I'm certainly going to investigate the two men mentioned and see if I can get more information.  Thanks also for the website you mentioned.

Hey Newfy - your detective skills are in fine fettle!

There is a birth in A/M/J 1913 in Wandsworth for Katherine Haslam, mothers maiden name Williams, in Wandsworth

There is a birth in J/F/M 1914 in Neath (Wales)for a Louisa Stuart mothers maiden name Williams

There is a birth in O/N/D 1914 in Paddington for a Sidney Stuart, mums maiden name Fuller

Given the area, I think we can be fairly sure that Jenny's Gertrude Fuller married Sidney Stuart!!

Phew £7 saved!!

Going back to the original post the only problem with all this is it might not be the right Gertrude Fuller!   If you know her father's name then specify that when you order the certificate.   Do you happen to know the church where she was baptised?   She might have married there and then you can look at parish records which is a cheaper option.

Thanks. One more question please --- I have Gertrude Fuller b 1892, marrying George Heslam (I now vaguely remember an Uncle George) but I want to find out the name of Gertrude's father.  In the 1901 census she lives with Maria b. 1856 who I assume is her mother and brothers and sisters  Maria is head of family.
I've tried searching all marriages between 1880-3 (guessed) in various associated towns       firstly of Maria --  and then for ---Fuller but no success.  Any ideas?
