Killean or Killearn?
« on: Tuesday 23 January 07 22:57 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find the birth for George Buchanan, who in the 1851 Census Glasgow, gives his birthplace as "Killean" Ross, I thought it was meant to be Killearn!
I cannot find a George Buchanan's birth (about 1802-1806) father Robert,in Killearn  no idea of father's  occupation. I know he had at least one sister Elizabeth.

So here's hoping that there is a Killean, and I can find a record  ( the informant at his death in Australia states his mother's name was Helen but I'm not sure that that is correct)

Cheers

Hi CJW

I live in R & C and I'm not familiar with this. It may be a very small place that I don't know of.

I checked the Gazeteer and find that Killean  is a parish in Argyll and Killearn is a parish in Stirling. The nearest in R & C are Kilearnan and Kiltearn*. See:

Hiya CJW,

another possibility might be "Killin", "Killene", and various spelling variations, hamlet of half a dozen households, close by Garve in Contin Parish, R&C.

All the best,

Donald.

p.e.s., my guess is etymology for the name is "small church", though "Kill" for church is more common in Ireland than Scotland.
Primarly Coigach, but also other parts of Ross and Cromarty.

C.J.W,  might the parish not be Kiltearn, around Evanton on the north side of the Cromarty Firth, Ross-shire. Interestingly there is a monument to George Buchanan ,the Tutor of James VI, in the village of Killearn north of Glasgow, but that needn't concern us here. Good Luck...Skoosh.
