I spent a whole day looking through the parish records in Wigan looking for Joseph Clementson's baptism but with no luck. It was the first time I'd been to a records office so maybe I missed something.
Next time I'll try the marriages to see if I can find the marriage of his father George.
A funny thing on Joseph and Caroline's marriage cert. the witness is marked as "Joseph Clementson". Is it a mistake made when transcribing or were there other Clementsons in the area. Only a visit to the records office will tell me more I suppose.
I think you're right about concentrating on Durham as I've found a William and Mary Whitecross living with son John in Hartlepool on the 1841/51 censuses.
