WA Wills
« on: Friday 26 January 07 10:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi

The majority of my research has been conducted using UK records, but I have recently found an Australian branch to my family and I don't know too much about Aus' records.  Is there any way I can get a hold of a copy of a relatives Will from the time of his death in Perth in 1902?

Thanks for any assistance that can be offered

Regards
Darren

Hi Darren

You could try the following -

PROBATE REGISTRY
14th Floor National Mutual Building
111 St Georges Terrace
Perth   WA   6000

Telephone: 08-9421-5152

Dates:   1832 - current

Index:   In house - no public access

MAIL : Write stating the name, date of death and last address of deceased.

Fees:   Search fee $20 to search the index.  A reply will be sent advising whether or not a file has been found.  If a file is located, a quote will be sent for copying at $3 per page

Grant of Probate and will only will be sent. Probate papers showing financial accounts, etc will only be released with permission of the Registrar

I couldn't see any method of payment - perhaps write to the address with an initial enquiry.

Hope this helps

Cheers

I have to be glad I need no wills from the West - $3/page!  I thought the $1.10 at the Qld archives was expensive! And why not release financial information? I can look at wills and probate and inventory etc for any will more than 30 years old in this part of Oz. (I also have some from Tasmania - 50cents a page to copy down there).

Some government organisations seem unbelievably obtuse about reality!

Hi Trish

Agree with you - I am surprised the index is not available to the public ???

Hi all,

I visited the State Library of WA a few weeks ago. There is as index that is easily searched on mircoform and the wills themselves are also available on mircofilm for anyone to look at. I can't remember what year they went up to, but my latest will was from 1928. Copying cost 45c per page. Unfortunately, I won't be going back for a while, but if you contact the library, I'm sure it will be cheaper than the Probate Registry.
