Gleeson - Fedamore
« on: Saturday 27 January 07 19:15 GMT (UK) »
The purpose of this post is to update my earlier one.  I have been successful in tracing all the siblings' births, marriages and deaths.  I also have established the dates of my 2 grand parents' deaths.  (All this information would not have been discovered without the very valuable assistance of a lady who works in Limerick).

However, their births and marriage have not been resolved.  On the basis of census and valuation details, I was able to calculate within reason the approximate year(s) of birth.  On submitting these details to the Registrar General's Office they returned 2 acknowledgements saying that they were unable to identify either birth.

Details of my 2 grandparents are as follows:-

1.  James Gleeson    died  20 May 1929     aged  57

His father was also James Gleeson and I would imagine his son was born at Boolavoord, Fedamore, Co Limerick.

2.  Ellen Gleeson nee Enright    died  29 May 1932    aged  65

Prior to marriage she lived in Parkaree (Manister) and again I would think she was born in this small place.

3.  Their marriage is a total mystery to me.  My mother was born on 8 February 1898 at Boolavoord, so I presumed that they were married early 1897 or 1896.  Again no trace whatsoever.  The records office produced a marriage certificate in Limerick Cathedral but the bride's maiden name was incorrect!

I should be extremely grateful for any suggestions as to how I may resolve these outstanding matters.

Hi
I have some gleesons from Fedamore in my family tree. But none that match with your names. You should be able to get records for John Gleeson as i know the Parish records go back to the very early 1800 and some to the seventeen hundreds.I would start by getting your mothers.www.gro.ie would be the wed address to get some. I'm sure if you checked out the Limerick Dioese wsbsite that you can get a contact for the church in Fedamore there. As far as i Know the post office in Fedamore is still owned by Gleesons.I will be happy to compare and help

Hello Maresa,

Thank you for your reply.  Since I posted my original request I have made a little progress.  I have looked at the local diocese web-site and have printed off full details of Fedamore parish.  I am considering telephoning the local priest as I would like to know if both grandparents and 2 of the children, Margaret and Eugene, are buried in the local cemetery.  The others, John is, I think, buried in Glasnevin, Dublin and May following marraige moved to Co. Clare where I vaguely remember, she died.  I recall writing a couple of times to her husband, a farmer, I think, but I have no recollection of the address.

My grandparents, Jogn Gleeson, was a small farmer in Boolavoord, Fedamore.  He was married to Ellen Enright.  (My sister has a small embroidered piece of cloth showing her maiden name and a place of birth as Par Karee.  This does not mean anything to me).  I also think there was another Gleeson just up the road from this farm who may have been a relation.

I have not been in Fedamore since 1953 and have not been in Ireland since June 1972.  Following my mother Johanna's death in January 1987 contacts with the Gleesons in Ireland ceased.  The 2 sons of John, James (Jim) and John are as far as I know still living in England but I do not have any contact with them.  My sister, who lives in Canada, has not spoken to any of the family in Ireland for a very long time.  She used to exchange Christmas cards with cousin John in Newbury, Berks, where he and his wife were vets, but not recently.

Thank you for your offer of help.  Your reply is greatly appreciated.  I find that I had an easy ride in establishing my father's ancestors and I had a massive stroke of luck as someone had already gone back to the early 1600 hundreds - so I was very grateful.  Also here on Channel TV, they run teletext channels for lost contacts, service pals and those looking for help with their family trees.  This has also proved useful.

I apologise for the length of this message but any other pointers, however small, will be greatly welcome.

Yours,

Wyndham

Good evening, Annie,

Regretfully I am not aware of the existence of a person of this name and persuasion in my small branch of the Gleeson family at this time.  I am only just starting to look into my mother's branch but I don't think so.  Sorry.

Yours,

Wyndham

Hi Annie,
I dont have him in my family. But know a little about him. In a book called The Widows Penny there is an extract from his diary from during the war. Also a picture of him on horseback. The author of the book met him and got permission to use the diary for his book.He was born i think in Templemore in Co Tipperary.
Dont know if any of this is any use to you.You may know it already.
