Corsley, WILTS. Look-up John LEWIS

Could someone please help and see if there is any mention of a John Lewis in Corsley abt. 1834? Have found info that he was b. there then to John and ?Sophia LEWIS. But also have(on his DC) b. Batheaston so unsure.

Thank you - even anything parents John and Sophia would be wonderful

It would be useful to know a little more about John and his family, but this 1841 census ties in with what you have stated:

1841 census HO107/931/2/41/6

John LEWIS 30 ag lab N (= Not born in county)
Sophia 20 Y (= Yes, born in county)
Maryann 10 Y
John 7 Y
Henry 6 Y

Address: Batheaston, Somerset

Am I correct in assuming that the death cert you have is an Australian one?  When did John emigrate and had he married by then?

looking at the 51 for the same family and then looking at births for daughter ellen mothers maiden name was bullock.

john lewis married sophia bullock 1840 bath register office.looks like sophia was a second wife? therefore one would assume that she is not johns mother.the death registers for batheaston on bath bmd only start at 1837.if your lucky and she died after 1837 we are looking at a 3 yr gap as a possiblility.
there is a harriet lewis aged 44yrs died 1837and an eliza lewis aged 28yrs died 1838.one of them could be your lady

Yes, the DC is a NSW one and it states that he was 96 years at death in 1930 which makes his birth abt 1834. BUT his MC to Ann WARD (1860 in Bathurst, NSW) states that his father was John and his mother was an Eliza EVANS! On FamilySearch there is a marriage between an Elizabeth EVANS and JOhn Lewis in 1834 but in Usk, Monmouth but that is a way from Bath or Batheaston - could that be correct.

The DC also states that his mother was Ann FRY which I hadn't noticed till Allibaker mentioned the possibility of John Sen second marriage and I went back and looked. I wonder if there is any mention of a death of Ann Fry, Allibaker, in the Register?

So now there are 3 variations and I'm darned if I know which way to concentrate!

John Jnr came to Aust when he was abt 23 years according to his DC

Hmmm LEWIS and EVANS are not uncommon names in Monmouthshire.  It is not inconceivable that your ancestors could have moved from Monmouthshire to Somerset, although for the most part people were moving in the opposite direction for work at that time.

Where did the Sophia come from?

Have you located the shipping record - that would seem to be quite important, to see whether any family members came with John.

Do you have occupations for the proposed father from the various certificates? 

Do any of the names occur later in the family - compare the census results for John's family with what he called his own children.
