Larkin and Swan - Cranbrook/Marden Area
« on: Sunday 28 January 07 09:43 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to find out where Jesse Larkin bn c.1804-7 and Sophia Swan bn c.1806 were born.  I know they were married Staplehurst 8 Sept 1828 but they do not seem to have been born there.  One of the witnesses to their marriage was a George Larkin.

They appear on the 1841 census living Eltham and Cranbrook respectively but emigrated to America before the 1851.  Sophia may have had a sister Rebecca born Marden.

I would be grateful if anyone has any information about these two or any  suggestions on how I can get any further.

Thanks, Anne

Hello Anne
I have Larkin family from Kent - Cranbrook and then Horsmonden.
I am away from home at the moment so do not have access to my records but will contact you again when I get back.  I can also check some Marden and Cranbrook baptisms - can't quite remember which years I have!

Hello Anne

No luck with Jesse Larkin in Cranbrook or Marden or Sophia Swan.
There are some Swan baptisms in Marden including a Rebecca bap 3 Jan 1808 aged 2 years d of Jon and Martha.  This couple have other children baptised in Marden

Elizabeth 1798
James 1800
Lucy 1808
Charles 1811

If you allow for Rebecca b about 1806 there is still a bit of a gap after James so i wonder whether they moved parishes for a while?

I will look to see if I have anything else useful.

Have you seen this site?

This might be useful.
There was a removal order for Jesse Larkin, lab, wife Sophia, Jesse(2) and an unbaptised infant (2 months) from Cranbrook to Staplehurst 2 December 1830.

Hi Barbara

Thanks for the information.  The removal order information is very interesting.  The Jesse junior age fits with what I know.  My gggrandmother Sarah Jane Larkin would probably be the infant.  She was born in Cranbrook sometime between 1823 and 1831 so it seems that it was probably Autumn 1830.

I have never heard of a removal order so I will look it up.  I will ialso investigate Jon and Martha Swan and see what turns up.

Thanks, Anne

Hello Anne, my great grandmother was born in Marden and her maiden name was Swan so I am wondering if there is a connection here  ???  Her father was Richard Swan and he married Amelia Jane Frances Bowers (who was from Ridgemount Beds).  Richard was the son of James Swan who I have as a farm labourer and who lived in Bishopsbourne in 1841.
