Conical 'thing' in wall near a road ...
« on: Sunday 28 January 07 21:00 GMT (UK) »
This 'thing' is in a wall next to a road somewhere near Abergavenny.  My friend wants to take me to see it ... but she's forgotten exactly where it is !  (Or what it is !)

Any idea of the place please ?   Any ideas what it is ?

Could it be a limekiln built into the roadside wall? ??? I wonder if it would show up on the Sites and Monuments Record?

Too small for a kiln. My guess is a monument. That style was popular in those days.

Whereabouts near Abergavenny? Surely it must be known locally. What does your friend call it?

It might be a waymarker. Have you looked at the archaeology of the area?

We've discovered what it is ... St Fagans has one !

BUT we still don't know whereabouts it was ... she was taking her sister on a tour of this part of Monmouthshire, and drove past it ... it could be anywhere !  We were going to try and find it again tomorrow !

Bingo, Lydart!

By "those days" I meant Victorian - sorry to be so vague (another senior moment - one day my senior moments will join up and I'll become completely gaga)  I suspected the thing was a memorial to the dead - we have one in our graveyard.

Now, I remember one of us RCs lives near St Fagans - which one - oh no - another senior moment...!  :-\

I've been having a look on the get a map facility on www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk around Abergavenny. There are lots of monuments marked. It might be worth you having a look with your friend - see if they remember the road that way.

My daughter says it looks like a kiln, but the St Fagans one has a trough outside - perhaps it's a sheep shelter.
