.......the 'sister in law'  bit for Irene is in relation to the 'Head' of the household which who was Henry Carter,  which would have been right...and not sister in law to Lily as you are thinking.

Hi Libby

I have just discovered  that Clara M Rogers is actually the sister of Susan E Carter!  See 1881 census ref: RG11/2104/71/29
Note:  earlier censuses have Susan as susanna or Susannah depending on census, daughter of Robert and Hellen (sometimes Ellen sometimes Eleanor!)

Is it possible perhaps that James and Susan are Lily's parents and Charles and Susan are parents to Irene, Charles and Clara.  There is 9 years difference between Lily and the next child Clara,  during that gap maybe James died and Charles took over!!!  Charles could have been a brother of James, perhaps?

What do you think?

Regards, Graham

I've had another re-think!!   On 1891 census Charles has middle initial J  so could James Charles now be calling himself Charles James,  more likely to be the same person!

Couldn't find a death of James Alp so maybe it can found under Charles........

I'm confused??? so this is what I have found so far.... (with everyones help of course)

Lily Ellen Alp born June qrt 1882 Weymouth 5a 3[39]9

1891 census RG12/1645/60/24 weymouth
Charles J Alp 34 Boot shoemaker Kent Chatham
Suzanne E     32                           Dorset, Weymouth
Lily E                8                           Dorset, Portland
Sarah Alp   mother 74                   Kent, Chatham

we know Susan Elizabeth Carter marries James Charles Alp in June qtr 1881 but I can find no marriage of a Susan(anna, annah) to a Charles. Could he have maybe preferred to be called Charles rather than James??

Susan dies in 1900 aged 39 which roughly ties in with her age in 1891 and what the family in Canada believe happened because Charles goes on to marry an Ada Kate Cotter in 1902 in Portsmouth but his name is James Charles Alp!!

So have we missed something?? Should we really be looking for 'James Charles Alp' in the 1891 census and is the above not him at all!!!!!!

Confused of Wiltshire, helping friend in Canada!!!! :P

cant find death of a James or a Charles  but then FREEBMD isn't fully complete yet.

Interestingly though I found a birth record for a Charles ALP 1854 registration district Medway (which would have covered Chatham)  I think this is the same charles as on 1861 census aged 5, parents John and Sarah

So,  he could have been christened Charles but for some reason, it seems as a young man (at time of his marriage) he liked to be called James.  It still goes on today, people prefer to be called by middle names,  it was more common all those years ago.  And maybe on something official like the census he thought it wise to go by the name he was christened with.

PS.  remember,  I think James and Charles are the same person!!!!

All supposition of course, but plausible.  Ordering some certificates should help put it all together.

Just a correction on my reply re sister in law.  Should have been daughter in law which is another alternative for step daughter same applies to son in law.
