CARPENTER/HUBERT Marriage in Jersey
« on: Tuesday 30 January 07 13:01 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find the marriage of Philip George Carpenter born 1880 St Helier and Josephine Hubert born 1872 France. They had 4 children but I only have 2 - Josephine born 1913 St Helier and George born 1919. The other 2 children are a mystery. I have Philip on the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census so marriage after that. Grateful for any help.
Thanks
Mel

Hi Mel

Sorry for the delay in replying to this one but I missed it.

Philip George Carpenter was married  at All Saints Church, St Helier and the entry is in the volume June 1907 - April 2002 on page 87.  Josephine Hubert is on the same page.

Details of obtaining copies can be found at:

www.gov.je/homeaffairs/registrar

As for the children, do you have any idea of the range of dates to search? I would have to give details of all Carpenter births in that period.

Thank you Stewart - I will apply for the certificate

I have been told by a relative that Philip & Josephine had 4 children - Josephine Maud 15.11.1913, George 24.6.1919 and 2 other daughters. I do not know their dates of birth but perhaps they are between 1913 and 1919 or soon after. I believe Josephine (senior) died about 1928 when her daughter Josephine was about 15.
Anything you can add would be much appreciated.
Thank you once again
Mel

Hi

These are the Carpenters born in St Helier:

6th June 1914 - 2nd Sept 1916
Dorothy Ellen Carpenter - P17
Rita Gladys Carpenter - P37
James Dennis Carpenter - P37
Phyllis Lorraine Carpenter - P54

4th Sept 1916 - 28th Aug 1919
Dorothy May Carpenter - P89
George James Carpenter - P96

I couldn't see a a death for Josephine around 1928.

If you send away for the marriage certificate it might give a clue as to where they were living and might point to another Parish.

Thank you for all the information. I will apply for the marriage certificate. I have the certificate for Josephine born 1913 and she was living at 28 Parade, St. Helier, Jersey.  Josephine senior I think may have died in England.
Philip George Carpenter's parents were George Carpenter & Charlotte Elizabeth Noel and they had 5 children between 1872 and 1896 (dates from census's). If it's not to much trouble please can you look up their marriage (after 1871 census) and children's births. If I'm asking for too much just say!
Thank you
Mel

Hi Mel

It's no problem but will have to wait until next week as the Archive is now closed until Tuesday.

Hi Mel

First the easy bit. There is an entry in the St. Helier marriages for George Carpenter and Charlotte Elizabeth Masters Noel in the volume Sep 1867 - Feb 1875 on page 89.

Now for the more confusing bit.

You mentioned that there were 5 children. As you hadn't mentioned their names I went to the 1881 census and found 4:

Charlotte Mary Carpenter
Edith Maude Carpenter
James Carpenter
Philip George Carpenter

The 1891 census however finds George living with Mary and Philip Noel (presumably his in-laws) with James and Edith but no Charlotte (wife that is). He's also aged by an extra 10 years!!

The 1901 census has him living with Charlotte M A Rendall. Could this be the married name of his daughter??

So I can only find 4 children and I can't find his wife after 1891. This goes against what you put in your email. Before I go and look these children up, could you confirm my findings please?

Thank you
I think this is the right family as I have the same names as you. George is listed as a wid on 1891 census and is with his in laws, so I guess his wife died between 1881 - 1891. He is with his married daughter and family in 1901 so he died after 1901.
The 5th child I have is Walter Carpenter from 1901 census but i now believe he may be George nephew or grandchild
Best Wishes
Mel
