House Owner
« on: Tuesday 30 January 07 16:45 GMT (UK) »
My gr grandmother lived in a house in Kingston, Surrey from c1900 until her death in 1950 and I'm interested in finding out who owned the house.

Is there any way I can find out.  I know the house was demolished sometime ago.

I would ask the local Record Office if they have the rates book for the area but that would tell you who paid the rates so may not give the owner. Was the house new when gt gran moved in or was it on the earlier censuses?

Hi Trees
Thats an idea - I hadn't thought of the rates book.  I don't think the house was new at the time but haven't managed to find it on any other census records.
Thanks for your help

Google search Land Registry- then find the right area office for Kingston.

They might be able to help........at a price???

Not sure if they would charge or not?

Hi Carol
I took your advice and googled Land Registry and found the office for Kingston.  They only seem to refer to current properties and not those which have been demolished, so I'm not sure whether they would still hold the title deeds.  I know deeds have little value anymore and many are being destroyed so I don't know whether they would even exist any more.  I may just give them a call though to see whether they can help.

Thanks for your help

The so called 'Lloyd George domesday survey' will tell you who owned the house in 1910 or thereabouts. TNA have the full set, local record offices may have local records.

Every property is listed (for tax purposes) - see:
