What William did next.....
« on: Tuesday 30 January 07 20:46 GMT (UK) »
In 1861, I have a relative called William Edward Grainger.  He is 2 years old. (RG9/2792)

In 1871, he is still living with his mother, Sarah, who has by then re-married and is a Griffiths instead of a Grainger.  He is 12 years old and is a scholar.

However, after 1871 he disappears.  I can't find any record of his death and no record of him anywhere in 1881.

Help!!!!

Hi Blue-Sten,

Well, I don't see him in 1881 either, but there is this family in 1891:

RG12/2889/40/21
98 Peel St., Tranmere, Cheshire
William A? Grainger, Head, 32, Railway Clerk, b. Warrington
Margaret E, Wife, 30, b. Lancs Newton Le Willows
Wyoming, Daur, 10, Scholar, born on board SS Wyoming at Sea
William E, Son, 4, born Tranmere
Elsie C, Daur, 1, b. Tranmere
Ethel, Daur, 2 months, b. Tranmere

Which could explain why he wasn't in England in 1881!  Here is some info on the SS Wyoming - it sailed between Liverpool and New York
http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_ship.asp?sh=wyomi

I looked for the family on the 1880 US census, but didn't find them.  Perhaps Wyoming was born on the way to the US, and they did not have any more children while there...

I tried to find a marriage for William circa 1880 so you could order the cert and check the father's name to be sure it is your William, but I could not see one between a William Grainger and a Margaret...

(There is also a Wyoming Grainger born in West Derby in 1904, who must be related to this family...)

Wow! Thanks a million.

Maybe they were on the ship during the census - I'll have a look into it.

Thanks again.

Not necessarily on the ship on that day, but left England sometime between the 1880 US census and the 1881 England - thus missing both censuses...

Hope you can turn something up!
