Shooters Hill Kent George Taylor
« on: Wednesday 31 January 07 07:10 GMT (UK) »
My husbands g grandfather, according to the 1881 census was born in Shooters Hill in approx 1852. I have searched high and low for this man with no luck. Is it possible to find on the 1851/1861 cenus those who worked in the large homes at Shooters Hill. I have done some homework on the subject and I think it was Pricess Charlotte who lived at Shrewbury House in Shooters Hill, where are they on the census?
My hubbies g grandfather was George William Taylor born approx 1850/1854 Shooters Hill Kent. Father George gardener mother not yet known. My first concrete evidence of him is 1881 census in Chobham Surrey, married to Louisa Jane, prior to that he is a mystery. According to his marriage cert to Louisa (1877 in Chelsea)the witnesses are George and Fanny Taylor, but these could be either his parents or family members. Any ideas? I think that my only last chance to find anything out about him is via those who worked in the large houses in Shooters Hill

Hope anyone can help.

Hi Jan,

which 1881 census did you look at?  I have been searching 1881 and 1871 census and have only found the following:

1881: RG11, 873, 20, 33,  13 Augustine Rd, Millton in Gravesend,
George William Tayler b. 1846 Woolwich, Kent (Staff Sergt. R.M.L.J.)
Louisa Cath. Tayler b. 1853
Anna Maria Tayler b. 1867 (Dressmaker App.)
Edwin Alex. Tayler b. 1871 (scholar)

1871: RG10, 908, 35, 4, Gravenshire(?) Hill
George William Taylor b. 1846 Woolwich, Kent (Perfcant(?) Instructor)
Elizabeth E E Taylor (23) b.1848
Anna M. Taylor (4)
Edwin Alex Taylor (7 months)

See what you can make of the above.  Hope it helps further, if not I'll see what else I can do.
Regards,
Vivien

Thanks for that Vivien. My George Taylor in 1881 census is at Chobham Place  Chobham Surrey. Born 1854 (this changes with every census) Shooters Hill Kent.Wife Louisa Jane children William  and LouisaI have had lots of people try over the years to find him prior to the above but with no luck. My thinking is now that if I could find on the 1851 and 1861 census, people working at the large houses that used to be at Shooters Hill, I may discover his parents. They must have been servents and so maybe he was born at one of the homes in Shooters Hill. In some census he just puts his birth place as Kent.
Thank you

Hi Jan,

had another look at the 1871 census - no luck, tried 1861 - no luck.  Did a Google search for Shrewsbury House, Shooters Hill and found it.

Also found this link: www.missing-ancestors.com

Might be of help to you.
