photos - army

Would anyone know if you can get photographs from anywhere of people who served in the first world war.

I have two grandfather and have their numbers, but would love to find out more about them.

Hi Angela,

In relation to getting photograph's showing your rellies whilst in uniform, I am afraid you will have to be very lucky to locate any on the internet or else where. Most photograph's that show individual soldiers where taken for family use. You may be lucky that there could be a write up about them in their local paper or even in say a railway magazine of the period (that is if they worked for one of the main railway companies that is). Do you know which regiments that they served with? as some regimental photographs can be viewed but again, like I say, you would have to be very lucky in find one that have them in them. As an aside to the photographs if you want to find out more about them why not put their names, service numbers etc up on the board as one never knows what someone else may find, or may even be able to point you in another direction in your search.

It would be a great stroke of luck for you if you post the information on your soldiers and something turns up, but like Old Rowley says "you just never know".

Meantime, here's a link to a site that claims to have photos of the soldiers listed by Regiment.  However, it wants you to pay first before viewing.

Just have to keep on waiting and looking Angela, something like myself, I keep hoping and wishing that someday a photo will turn up of my relation, as that would be too wonderful for words.

Perhaps someone else on here can provide us with even more clues or suggestions for searching out  WW1 soldiers photos.

Thanks, yes I get really frustrated when you see all the people on the telly with photos from way back.  I don't even have one of my two grandfather.  Isn't that sad.

I think the first thing you should do is post their names and regiments, we might then be able to guide you to apprioriate sites

but remember there were millions of photos taken and there still are (probably)millions of un-named photos around
