The National Archives might have their service records. You could visit or pay a researcher and I think the NA will look for stuff for a fee...

You could also try the regimental/battalion histories and the NA will have the War Diaries - which can be copied - for a fee.

Thanks, one day I will go and visit the NA.

Would you know what  private 1st DLI means.  Is that the battalion he was in? Or would I find that out somewhere else?

Angela,

DLI is Durham Light Infantry.

If you attach the pdf files of the Medal Cards to a message on here, we may be able to tell you more.

What was the date of his marriage?
I ask because he wasn't 1st battalion DLI during the war. He must have transferred battalions at some point.

1st DLI were in India throughtout the war.
Your grandfather however was awarded the 1914-15 Star and first served in France 1915. hence not 1st Bn.

He got married in 1920 February.  He had coal miner underneath on his occupations so think he must have left the army by then.

Would you know where I could find out more about where he was.

Thanks

noting what Neil has said, i suspect the second service number underneath 25060 is a six figure number 10323*, this may mean he was in a territorial battalion and was re-numbered in 1917 (sorry the DLI isn't my field and i don't know the breakdown)

Yes it was a 6 figure no. if was a  (5) at the end.  Does that mean he was in the TA before the war or after?  That was the number he had on his marriage cert.

Thanks
