Have you got her in 1881 as James Salters wife? Can you give us detials please?

Were they together in 1871? Isee a James Salter with wife Ellen in 1871 but they are born and living in Hampshire!

What is the source for the information that her maiden name was Elphick?

This looks like them in 1871 - indexed Salton, and James place of birth very different! but I reckon it is them.

I am not sure about the 19 yr old one in the house of penitents because I found a 29 yr old servant in 1871, that could be her .... and we know ours is up north and with James Salter by 1871.

I'll see if I can find it again.

modified to add:  Memory not good. The one I had seen was RG10 1088 62 52, a 27 yr old Ellen ELphick born Shoreham.

I'd still be interested to know what the source was for her name being ELphick
