Hi Sue
have you tried the scotland web site : www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk - you can search for births etc on there. It might give you some clues. you pay for 30 credits that cost £6 and last about 90 days (I always use them in less than a week!!) I don't have any credits on there at the moment or I would look them up for you. but you can look up their births and marriage. remember to tick the soundex box if a certain spelling of the surname doesn't come up with anything. just had a free peep - only 25 Lowries born in scotland between 1810 and 1812, so you might be able to narrow that down a bit if you pay up your pennies!
the birth certificates would certainly help you.
good hunting

Hi Sue
I've done some searches on www.Ancestry.co.uk and come up with this -
first on www.familysearch.org 1881 census James Laurie 69 born scotland printer compositer, and Agnes his wife also born scotland age 63 printer compositer's wife. address: 25 woodside Street, West derby.Lancs.
so on ancestry:
the dates all go  a bit wrong but
1871 in west derby, Liverpool they are there with a son william aged 20. but James and Agneas are both 50.
1861 living west derby, lancs James lawrie age 41 b 1820 and Agnes 41 both b scotland he's still on as printer compositer,
3 children
alexander 20 born scotland, - a ship smith
William 11 born liverpool,
and Agnes 5 born liverpool.
can't find them on 1851.
you really need to get on the scotlands people site to trace them further back.
hope this is of some help
regards

Hi again Revmother,

I have been on all those sites i spent a fortune on scotland people (but dont tell OH) ::).

I got all the names of possible parents for james and agnes, but have spent weeks going off in the wrong directions , i know that on the 1861 cesus , agnes was not at home, but james sister margeret from scotland was visiting , so i searched all deaths for agnes and came up with died 1858, havent found her on any other census after that so think that is her . I have the names of children , 1 was called james who is my direct line , so i think i am on the right track there .
I have trawled all the greer,s in scotland , in all counties , but there were so many of them that came from ireland , so not sure which way to go .
I have been trying to trace the lowrie,s in scotland by , james dad john was a butcher on maraige cert and he had a sister called margaret , am i getting myself in a mess ? or do you think this is the way to go ?.
Thank you for your advise and help .

Hi Sue
If only you could find james on the 1841 census - he would be at home with his parents then perhaps, but it is difficult when the ages vary so much.
Interesting that the eldest son Alexander was born in Scotland. What if you found out his birth details, it would at least give you the part of Scotland that they were living then.
It's one of those searches that can take a while to get tot he root of. but you will, in time. do another bit of your tree and come back to it later!

Hi ,
You must be really sick of me now ,

James moved to liverpool before the 1841 census as he married agnes in liverpool in 1839 and was living in frederick st liverpool , i think the james and agnes with the son alexandre is another family , as the children i have for them are
Agnes b1841
george b1845
isabella b1847
and james b 1850
all born in everton liverpool .
I have them on all census records .
As i said there was no agnes in 1861 census , then 1871 cant find james b1811 but think i found death records for him and agnes .

Well i think i have troubled you enough , i am searching scotlands people for margaret lowrie b 1822 father john from scotland to cross reference any john lowrie i find with daughter margaret and son james born the dates as above .

I dont often ask for help as i feel i am putting on folk , but i have say how much i appreciate you taking the time to help and advise me like this ,
best regards
sue

Many thanks for your help.

Is there any other churchyard that people living in tarbolton may have been buried at. In particular Annie /Agnes Nelson(msDoyle) and Ellen Nelson(Finneran) and some of Ellens children. They all died in Tarbolton in either Garden Street or Montgomery Street.

Thanks again Liz

Hi Liz
I had a look at the surnames you ask about, but you don't give any dates. I can't see anyone with those names at all. There is a large area of Tarbolton cemetery that has no memorial stones - they would be some of the oldest graves, I think. Also, there is a much newer cemetery that is in current use that I don't have a list for. I'm sorry I can't help.
I too have relatives who lived and died in Tarbolton, and they don't appear on my list of memorials. It's all very frustrating.
best wishes
