Jacobite Army Muster Roll
« on: Friday 02 February 07 05:51 GMT (UK) »
I have reason to believe an ancestor was in the Jacobite Army (1745). I have been told there was a Jacobite Army Muster Roll on the Internet.  I have searched for it without success. Would SKS have any idea where I can find it.
Any help appreciated.

Hi Sarra,
Would the National Archives of Scotland have the rolls?  Even if they don't, they might know where to find them - try this page:
http://www.nas.gov.uk/guides/military.asp

Cheers

Prue,
My apologies for not replying before this.  I had a look at that site - and emailed them. Unfortunately they have not replied. But I did a search and I have located a copy in book form at my State Library - so just have to find time to visit the library.
Thanks - Sarra

Hiya,

There was a book published late 19th or ealy 20th century attempting to recreate the muster roll from various sources. As far as I am aware it is not on the internet.

Someone extracted the data for Cromartie's Regiment, and those in other Reg'ts from Lochbroom, it is a booklet that can be viewed at the Ullapool Museum.

A volunteer sent me a copy some years back to see if I could identify those in the Regiment from Coigach... I have not added it to my website as the work is copyright, but if there is a particular person you are looking for I'd be happy to look him up.

All the best,

Donald.
Primarly Coigach, but also other parts of Ross and Cromarty.

Donald,
Thanks for your kind offer to search the muster roll.
I'm looking for JOHN FORRESTER born in North Leith Scotland c.1723. I believe he joined the Jacobite Army in 1745.  It's quite possible John fought with the lowland regiments at the battle of Prestonpans, near Edinburgh Sept 21 1745.
When or why John Forrester left the Army is unclear - he was wounded or more likely deserted.  He made his way to Staffordshire - married and had a number of children.
Appreciate it if you can find him on the roll.

Hiya Sarra,

No luck, he was not in Cromartie's Regiment. I'd reccomend you look up the book... probably at reference libraries in most major cities, or available through inter library loan.

All the best,

Donald.

Donald,
Thanks for that. I will have to make a trip to the State Library of Victoria.
The weather has been so hot here that I have not ventured too far afield. However the last few days the weather has become cooler.
