Photograph - help with some things
« on: Friday 02 February 07 14:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Could any of you  possibly give me a run down on this photograph?
The uniform the soldiers are  wearing - is this a dress uniform , just for special occasions ? And if possible - can you identify any of the medals in the picture, and what rank that some of  these men held?
Thank you for any help
Kind Regards:)

They're wearing miniature versions of their medals.
If you can give us a larger, more detailed scan just of the medals that the chap on the left is wearing, we may stand a chance to identify some. But not at this scale I'm afraid.  :(

I can't help with the medals but the photo looks like a gathering at a Senior NCO's mess do (SNCO's being sergeants and above) as they are wearing mess dress. The three men on the right of the pic seem to be wearing Sgt's stripes.

Has anyone noticed the circular badge on the lower right sleeve of two of the men? Could these be Warrant Officer badges? ???

Hi,
What I'm also trying to find out is , can you tell what regiment this would  be - or would it be all " SNCO's" from all different regiments together?

The photo was taken New Years Eve 1958 in Singapore .

Kind Regards

That's a bit better for the medals.
I'm pretty sure I can see the 1939-45 Star, Italy Star & France and Germany Star in the middle of that group. Then presumably you have the Defence Medal and War Medal at the end.

As for the first two, based on the ribbons and the style of suspender on the second, I'd hazard a guess at General Service Medal 1918-62 and India General Service Medal 1936-39.  :) ;D

Anyone agree? Or not?

Hi Cell!

Serjeants Mess Do - probably the best place to be not to much pomp  ;)

What is your interest in the photo? do you suspect one might be family?

Wendi  :)

Hi Neil, thank you so very  much!
It fills in a few gaps for me.
Really thank you so much for your observations, I can't thank you enough .
Very Kind Regards :)

Hi Wendi, This is a photo of my grandfather, who I knew very well, but, I'm trying to fill in some of the gaps. He was in the RUR when he first joined ( well before ww11)   , and in the RUR when during ww11( and RUR when my mum was born  he was still with them (on  her birth cert ) - he then moved  his family to England (colchester) with his family  (my mum and siblings etc)  in about  1952 where he was stationed, and always off abroad with the army. He was a Sergeant.
My mum (and siblings)grew up without her father basically , as he was always off abroad (spent his whole working life in the army)- he was army through and through - he was lost without them!   ( I assume he would no  longer  being the RUR when he moved to England permanently( hence my question - what regiment, as this photo was taken when my grandfather and family moved from Ireland .
In the very last years of his career he was  in the Glasshouse( not as an inmate I may add :D  ).

 Very Kind Regards :)
