Lloyd/Donovan 1871ish
« on: Friday 02 February 07 14:59 GMT (UK) »

Is it possible for someone to have a look at the 1861 Dublin census for me?
I'm looking for

Thomas Lloyd, born about 1847.
Ann Donovan, born about 1850.
They married 2nd Oct 1870 in Rathmines RC Chapel, South Dublin.
He was a boatman and lived at 32, Clanbr......?  His father was John Madden (why has he got a different surname to his son?)

Ann lived at Doyles Court and her father was William Donovan.
They had a daughter, Sarah Ellen, in Oct 1871, in Dublin, and then they moved to Liverpool.  Her grandparents were Patrick Kelly and Mary Gilson but I'm not sure which side of the family they were on.  Confused?  I am!

I'd love to know more about them when they were still in Dublin.   The names of both Thomas and Ann's mothers.  Did they have brothers and sisters...etc.

I've got then on the 1881 Liverpool census.

What would boatman mean in Dublin in 1870?  Ferryman, Canals? Local docks?

I'd be most grateful for any information.

Thanks,
Tony

I do not have access to the census but I know Clonbrassil street on the south side of Dublin, It leads to Harolds cross bridge which is over the Grand Canal. It was known as Little Jerusalem in the ould days and when I were a lad I used to deliver Kennedys bread to the shops and houses there. Its all very built up nowadays.
If you draw a line from the four courts over the liffey  up the hill and under Christ Church Cathederal arch (I think Bono owns this now) you meet Patricks Street, Clonbrassil Street is next as far as I remember.
The boatmen could have worked on the docks beyond Tara Street Bridge or on the Grand Canal barges both of which were within walking distance of Clonbrassil Street.
 Regards.
