Irish ancestor
« on: Friday 02 February 07 16:48 GMT (UK) »
My G.G.G. Grandmother married my G.G.G. Grandfather in Chatham, Kent, in 1816, he had just returned from the Battle of Waterloo and was demobbed to Chatham (he came from Bedford) her name was Eleaner Donnar.

On all the census returns it says she came from Ireland.

Is there anywhere I can start to see if I can find any more about where she came from in Ireland, or why at that time would she or her family have come to Kent. I have not found any of here family name in Chatham in any of the census returns.

thanks

Carol

Could the name be Donough? I haven't a relative with that name but I knew a person with that name a long time ago.

Hi there,

It is actually my G.G.G. Grandmother, her name was Eleaner (Ellen) Donnar,
and I am not sure if this spelling is correct. when she married in Chatham in Kent in 1816 she could not read or write and she would have just said her name as she hear it, and the Church person would have written it as he thought, so it could be anything really.

Hi there,

My G.G.G. Grandfather was John Simmons, born in Bedford. 1787.
He joined the army in 1805 and was discharged after being wounded at the Battle of Waterloo into Chatham on the 12th November 1816. He was in the 40th regiment of Infantry. when discharged he was a sergeant.

Hope this helps

Carol
