WOW thank you - Stan.

I was beginning to wonder about poor houses - because on my MIL birth cert it says she was born in Liverpool maternity hospital, I thought that was quite unusual, most babies back then were born at home.

Wonder if they went back to Beaufort Street, or if they they had split?

Interesting.

Great detective work, Stan  :D

Miss Poohs, this is really interesting...and slaps on the wrists for both of us, for slagging off English certificates  :-[ :P
You might find this discussion interesting - towards the bottom there is some information about why a woman might have given birth at the workhouse:

http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-6957.html

Also, if you Google 144a Brownlow Street, you will get lots more information about that workhouse and workhouse infirmaries in general.

I would assume she was in the work house for the medical care - I'd love to know more though.

Fascinating stuff though eh?

What an interesting thread - I'm sure there is a thread somewhere on RC about a lady claiming to have been deserted by her husband (she wasn't) so she could have a babe in the workhouse - apparently the best place at the time to give birth! But I think it will take some searching to find the post.

I wonder if it was not the Workhouse but the Liverpool Maternity Hospital? A new Lying-in (maternity) Hospital was built on a site at the corner of Brownlow Hill and Brownlow Street. This was completed in November 1884 and opened to patients in February 1885.

But surely they wouldn't state 144a Brownlow Hill as the mum's residence, if her husband had a home else where - i.e. 99 Beaufort St, inless she was actually under the care of the work house?

Curiouser and curiouser!!!

As a slight diversion (sorry!)  I Googled as Prue suggested, and just read

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/index.html?education/children.shtml

... where if you scroll down, you can see a piece written by Stanley (of 'Dr Livingstone I presume' fame) about the treatment he got in the workhouse.  Makes you cringe to read it !

Hi Casalguidi

My MIL was born 20 Sept 1924 - but I'm not sure when her mother was admitted to the work house/maternity hospital - around the same time I'd imagine.

Off to read that link.
