Advice please on where to start
« on: Sunday 04 February 07 01:21 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I am looking for a marriage John DIGBY & Catherine LANDERS about 1815 - 1819 in Waterford.

I have PR's of all their children born in Braintree in Essex 1819-1836. From census docs I know that John was born in Braintree, and Catherine Waterford Ireland.  A copy of her death certificate shows she was born 1796.

I cannot find their marriage in Braintree or surrounds.  I am now thinking that John may have come to Ireland and married Catherine in Waterford.

Not sure where to start with this Irish research given my limited information.  Would appreciate any advice please.

Many thanks
Helen

Hi Helen,
On the familysearch.org site,  on the IGI, there is an entry for John Digby and Catherine Landers; it says their marriage was in 1816, Waterford, Ireland, but no further details as to the exact place.
So looks like your hunch is correct. It also says that John Digby was born in Waterford 1790; and Catherine 'about 1795' also in Waterford.
So, there is either a mistake with the info given on the IGI (not uncommon, you have to be careful, check everything!); or the mistake was on John Digby's census info somewhere.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

Hi Mags,

John was definitely born in Braintree as per census images, and Catherine Waterford Ireland. His death certificate also shows he was born 1786c.  For years I have been trying to find their marriage in Essex. I have been able to trace family members BMD & census(up to 1901), and they all stayed in the Essex. Given that all their children were baptised in the Braintree Essex parish church I would have assumed they married there, but no  :-\

Landers is not a common name in Essex, a search of FreeBMD 1837 - 1901 only showed 4 deaths and 2 marriages, no births, and none of these in Braintree.

A search of Ireland Ancestor's site shows that Landers is a fairly common name in Waterford, but not one DIGBY is registered.

So I am now more convinced John who was a fish hawker may have come to Ireland, married Catherine there, and returned to his home town of Braintree.

My quandary is where to start to look for her birth details and their possible marriage, as there are so many parishes, and all I know is Waterford, Ireland :-\

Many thanks for responding to my posting.

Bye Helen

Hi Helen,

Just wondering how far you have got with your Landers ? I do know that there was a large family of Landers around the Lismore area of Waterford around 1970 and earlier. Dont know the family history but may be a starting point.

Best Wishes
