Grandfather wounded in WWII
« on: Sunday 04 February 07 14:16 GMT (UK) »
My Grandfather served with the 2nd Battalion The East Yorkshire Regiment during WW2 and went ashore on D - Day on Sword Beach.

He was wounded on the 27th June 1944 and I was wondering whether there was a way of finding out where he would have been wounded, ie what the particular campaign was and where in France?

I'm going to send off for his army service records but in the meantime wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction?

I should add that he died in 96 so I'm not in a position to ask.

Cheers

Matt

Hi Matt

Try the Regimental War Diaries for the period.

Hi Spook,
I'm not sure if it's still available, but have you seen this book:

Bit of history here:

I would assume that the Regimental Diaries will be at the National Archives in Kew.

Good luck.

Hi spook you really must Google more  ;D

http://www.yorkshirevolunteers.org.uk/pwo.htm

How about their museum as a first port of call?

How how I would do it is, visit www.amazon.co.uk type in "East Yorkshire Regiment" which brings up some books one of which is "Duke of York's Own 1939-45" by P R Nightingale.

Secondly I'd visit my local library to find out what they could find for me.

Also I recommend the Military Library in Aldershot for a phone call, and also Aldershot Library whose Military Librarian is first class.  If you want to PM me I can give you his name and number.
