Rank of a soilder
« on: Sunday 04 February 07 22:19 GMT (UK) »
Albert Thomas who is in uniform won a commodation for saving a soilders life in dead mans land.  We are not sure what medal it was we think it is the one lesser than the Victory Cross ( the man he saved got that one),

Can anyone tell what rank Albert is by his uniform, I know he was in the Lancashire Fusilers but that is all we know.

I am hoping if i find what rank he was i will be able to trace some info about his army days

Hello

Have you tried looking at the "medals" page on the National Archives (online, searchable) ?

The soldier in the pic is a Lance Corporal (L/Cpl) a Commendation does not mean you automatically get a medal, it means he got a pace of paper saying well done.

As for Victory Cross, do you mean Victoria Cross.

Hi foggyjano !

There's 7 Albert Thomas' who served with the Lancashire Fusiliers !! but none are L/Cpl  :-\

The good news is ... that if you order one - there are 6 cards on a sheet - so you'll probably get them all for 3 pounds 50  :)

The bad news is .... there's 7 of them !!  ::)

Thanks for your replies, he defo got a medal, but it is in the usa, and a piece of paper... Cant get in touch with the person in the usa and the person who has the "piece of paper" is very poorly so i dont like to mither him....

I was thinking that i might get some info from the various sites on the
Lancashire Fusiliers rather than national archives, but i didnt know what rank he was to start looking..

I also know he recruited men into the army but we think he might have done that in the 2nd world war...

Thanks I will look on the Lancashire Fusiliers for lance corporals, it might of meant he was not a lance corporal when he got his commodaiton.

Sorry about the wrong medal Victoria Cross, I suffer from an illness that makes me get my words mixed up alot..lol.. you should try working with it some days...lol ;D

Hi foggy

Is he a relative? I was wondering if it was possible to date the photo, perhaps by the ages of the children?
