Transportation Ramillies
« on: Monday 05 February 07 10:03 GMT (UK) »
Hello there

Can anyone give any information about John and James Hayward?
They were Transported to Australia aboard The Ramillies and arrived in 1854.
John and James were brothers they were born in Dorset England.
Best wishes and thanks.
Wien

Try www.convictcentral.com - it has a "passenger" list for the Ramillies and shows the Hayward brothers with a 15 year sentence for "sacrilege" - what did they do?

Best wishes

Hi Wien  :)

Welcome to Rootschat!

What sort of information were you after for the Haywards?  The WA archives hold convict records for that state; see:
http://www.sro.wa.gov.au/collection/convict.asp

Hope that helps  :)

I  think   that  the charge  of "Sacrilege"  is stealing from a  church

regards jenn

ps  there was a  lot  of baddies  on  this  ship as well  as  just  poor petty criminals

Hi Wien,
Here is another page (the one I was looking for last night actually) with more info about the Ramillies, and names of the people who were on it:

bit of a long leap, but could be relevant
on WA Pioneer index
Deaths
HAYWOOD [not WARD]
James HAYWOOD parent unknown, birth place unknown died  in 1896 at 70 years
John HAYWOOD parent unknown, birth place England, died in 1902 aged 74.

some convicts deliberately changed their name to put the past behind them.

Dear Sue

Just read your reply on this one. On the convictcentral site with the Hayward names it has "AKA Haywood" in the additional comments column on the list of convicts. Perhaps they used either spelling.

Best wishes

Ah.. this was not [for obvious reasons] mentioned on the RAMILLIES site which I looked at from Prue.
The ages on my find are not really quite right, BUT close I guess.
