irish ancestors

hello...i wondered if anyone could advise me on how to start to find where an ancestor came from ireland...my gt grandmother was a Ellen donelly c1865 from ireland (this information i got from my grandfather's birth certificate, Abel c1893) she married a Abel law c1859 from clavering  Essex...i can find Abel on the census 1871, but not on 1881, then again on 1891 married with first son James who was born in ireland c1887...i don't know anything else about Ellen...IE..where she came from, date of marriage or even where James was born only the year...i have no idea on where or how to start tracing this line, or any descendants from James...any help will be gratefully received....xmaryx

I don't know if they are available on-line, but I do know that the FHS centre near the Royal Albert Hall (checked your profile and noted that you are in London) has an amazing collection of all the Irish BDMs on film.  I used up several days of my holiday last year going through them which advanced my searching no-end.
